If you’re like me (which can be a good or bad thing) you used to spend Saturday mornings with your dad, clad in pajamas and eating a bowl of cereal, watching Mystery Science Theater 3000 (or MST3K) on the Sci Fi channel (as it was known before it’s crossover into the “SyFy” channel), or if you’re a bit older, it was on Comedy Central. But, that was the best bonding a father and his son could have. Better than fishing (no sunburn, bug bites, or disappointments) and you didn’t have to get your fingers greasy with engine grease fixing up that old Camaro that had been in the garage for lord knows how long. The only grease you had to worry about was popcorn grease. And I guess your tears from laughing so hard, but if you have greasy tears you should really consult a doctor. That is not the focus of this, however, no matter how greasy your tears are (seriously, go see a doctor). Mystery Science Theater 3000 had an amazing run. It ran from 1988 to 1999, having one-hundred ninety-seven episodes. The premise of each, if you have never seen the show (and there are a lot of full episodes on Youtube I suggest you go watch… right now…. Do it), was three individuals (one human and two robots, Tom Servo and Crooooowwwwww) were forced to watch old, cheesy movies, everything from Godzilla vs. Megalon to (my personal favourite episode) Boggy Creek 2: The Legend Continues. And throughout each movie the “audience” would heckle and joke about the movies, creating funny anecdotes or alternate identities for the characters. It was (and still is) a riot. Now, the people who brought us MST3K do something called RiffTrax. A direct explination from their site is this: “RiffTrax are hilarious commentaries that you play along with a DVD, or are merged with movies and classic shorts that you can watch on-demand. We also sell this awesomeness on DVD (http://www.rifftrax.com/)”. They have done everything from Refer Madness to Twilight. They are an amazingly talented bunch of people. Fortunately, Fathom Events is bringing the RiffTrax gang to theaters across the country with a live commentary of Starship Troopers! It is going to hit theaters for one night only on August 15, 2013. So grab your tickets now and join the gang for a laugh-out-loud fest on planet Klendathu and get ready to fight off the Bugs… with laughter of course. (Seriously, go see a doctor, greasy tears are not good). |
