The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are once again back in the video game scene with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. In this newest game, April gets kidnapped, and its up to the turtles to save her. Shredder is behind the scenes, and doing what he does best to bring down the turtles. The game itself plays out like a Saturday morning turtles cartoon. There is coop available with all the four ninja turtles, and each ninja turtle has their own set of moves and weapons. Also available for the turtles are power drinks that can make the turtles stronger, as well as grenades that can used against enemies. With this game brings some goodness to the turtles games franchise. The one good aspect in this game is that each turtle has their own unique feel and look. When you go to the upgrade screen for each turtle, you could find tons of upgrades, such as attacks and combo upgrades. All of the attacks and combos work well throughout the game. Also it is really fun to see the turtles take out the enemies together as a group instead of just one turtle, especially when the turtles combine their knockout moves. The turtles separate knockout attacks look really good too, and have a very nice flow to them. There is a good variety of enemies in this game, from foot ninjas to big and small robots. Despite this game being an arcade title, you could fight a lot of other enemies, compared to other arcade titles where you only fight a limited number of enemies. The content in this game is quite impressive; you have lots of moves to unlock, you can fight coop in either online or offline mode, and arcade mode and mission mode are available to play as well. Also there are lots of collectibles to unlock as you play the game. Despite the good gameplay and content, the controls are not that impressive. The response time is very slow; the controls found in Batman games are much tighter then the controls in this turtles game. Also, the controls in Batman and Spider man games have a much better response time. Some people may say that because the game is only fifteen dollars, the controls don't really matter that much; in reality if you don't take the time to make controls responsive, then the game is not going to be good as a whole. The camera has it flaws as well; even though it's not horrible, it could have been a lot better then what was delivered. The camera really goes array when you are vaulting over walls. Most of the move buttons don't work the first time you press them. It takes some tries to get the move buttons to work well. Throughout the game, the controls themselves have a sluggish feel to them. The glitches in this game are pretty bad too. At some points in the game you are getting stuck in the game, and the mini games have to reset many times so you could actually complete them. There are times though when the game does run smooth enough that you forget about the bad controls and glitches; these features are so dominant in this game however that it really drags the game down. There are good moments in this game, but they are completely boggled down by bad moments. So for every turtle fan out there, if you want to play this game, wait for a sale to go on or even when the game is free to play it. |
