Playstation won the hearts of many gamers and critics when they announced the Playstation 4 would release at $399, 100 dollars less than Xbox One. People proclaimed PS4 an automatic winner. Blogs, Twitter, and multiple online forums raved about the next gen console fair price, many believed the Playstation offered the same thing. $399 was the named the price at the expense of the Playstation camera. Sony had wanted to ship a revamped Playstation eye and move with each console but dropped the idea which could add to the factor of it being slightly cheaper. Shuhei Yoshida talks PS Eye "As far as I'm concerned, personally, it's the early days of development in terms of [camera] tech," he said. "It's not ready or mature enough to be able to really be taken advantage of by all kinds of games and all kinds of [experiences] consumers would want to have. That's a decision we made." Playstation will still sell the revamped eye separately for $59.99. But how will that fair? Despite many disliking the Kinect it still moved many units. This time Xbox is shipping a Kinect 2.0 with every console. Mostly everyone who has a Xbox One will have a Kinect. Now that the eye is sold separate how will the sales be? Move was Playstation's counter strike to Kinect and it didn't fair very well. In March 2013 Xbox announced that Kinect has reached 24 million units sold while Playstation move sold a little over 15 million since its launch. With Kinect 2.0 shipping with every new Xbox, how many units will Playstation sell as a standalone product? The future of the Playstation camera is still a mystery. |
